Boney M - The Musical

After the success of Mama Mia, a stage musical about Abba, comes a musical by the man behind legendary 70's band Boney M - German Frank Farian. Entitled Daddy Cool, the musical will centre around gangs based in London, have Shakespearian overtones with the lead being taken by Harvey - a singer with notorious East End rappers So Solid Crew.

Those not old enough to remember Boney M will remember plenty of their songs so omnipresent they have become over the years. Who can forget Daddy Cool - though perhaps more famous recently for being used in an advert for Tennents lager in 2000 and for the much-maligned Vauxhall Zafira a couple of years later. Brown Girl In The Ring is another timeless tune - used more recently to the words of Ruud Van Nistelrooy of Manchester United by their fans in the stands. Mary's Boy Child, however insipid, is the 10th best-selling single in Britain of all time while River's Of Babylon is at number five in the all-time list.

80''s made-up combo Milli Vanilli had to famously return the Grammy Awards they received once it was rrevealed the pair only fronted the group but the singing was done by Farian and a former backing member of Wilson Pickett. Other hits included Rasputin where the former cleric was described as 'Russia's greatest love machine'.

Ma Baker, a hit in the mid seventies, referred to a notorious mid-west US criminal of the Depression era while Hooray Hooray Its A Holiday - is still a popular, well, holiday tune.

Daddy Cool, the Musical opens at the Shaftsbury Theatre in London in April.
