The moment from whence the dark, dusky and dull spectre of "ugly commercial ignorant black music" replaced its more vibrant cousin "hip hop" can be traced back to the time (February 1994) when John Rangely's stab at immortality was usurped by a flavour (sorry flava) of the month - the laughably effeminate "gangsta" rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg. John Rangely, a director of Jack Pearsons (Turf Accountants) Ltd lost out for a Daily Star front cover despite having the temerity to advertise odds on the final body count from Cromwell Street (at the time these sainted cadavers were coming up quite slowly - Kick This Evil Bastard Out made the final edition). He had to play second fiddle to the dumb "Dogg" who seemed to be universally popular despite coming across like a teenage girl playing a male role in a school production of West Side Story (I think he murdered somebody by exposing his fanny to them). It was the thin edge of a disgustingly dull "showbizisation" of a previously vibrant exciting shiny new music. In its infancy you would make allowances for some rappers complete lack of intelligence because at least they attempted to sound like they had a purpose. One classic example Just-Ice "The Desolate One" (1989). Proto Gangsta rap at its best. What you see isn't quite what you get, he is a classic hypocrite (goes to court for beating his girlfriend up, raps about shooting anybody that fucks with him) yet he is part of the 80's "Stop The Violence In Hip Hop" movement and proudly displays their insignia on their album. I can reel off a list of semi obscure or famous rappers who in their time have not only reamed Tim Westwood after dosing him with rophynol but they have also exalted the common black man to the status of "your alright you, you are not like the rest of them". Gravediggaz -"Niggamortis" is one of the best albums ever made with "1-800 Suicide" being the most humourous self-destruction song with the grim gallows wit of one that is sticking a spike up the arse of the grim reaper. Now, all these black dingbats do is satisfy their accountants by boasting about their wealth, how hard they are or how they "keep it real". No better than overpaid cotton pickers bringing disgrace upon their race with their dogmatic lowbrow anti-everything that doesn't involve money, guns and pussy showboating.
