Best known early in his career as a producer, Kanye West came to the fore in 2005 as he received ten nominations for the Grammy awards. He won three including Best Rap Song for Jesus Walks and Best Rap Album for The College Dropout.

In his formative years he was a producer for artists such as Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and Ludacris but failed to get his own solo career off the ground due to him being middle-class and not looking like a proper rapper.

Talent will out and Kanye West improved on his debut album with the release of the follow up in August 2005 - Late Registration which spawned the hits Diamonds From Sierra Leone, Gold Digger and Heard Em Say.

West courted controversy in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina when saying that President Bush didn't like black people and openly mocked him in his attempts to portray himself as one of the "regular folk."

The Grammy Awards in February 2006 proved successful for West as he picked up the award for best rap album with Late Registration, the prize for the Rap Solo Performance with Gold Digger and also scooped the award for best rap song with his Diamonds From Sierra Leone.

In the same month, West won best male performer at the NME Awards where the Arctic Monkeys stole the show. Later the same month two stewards were shot by fans who could not get tickets for his show at the NEC in Birmingham England.

Anyone who can get digger to rhyme with the 'n' word deserves respect.
