Katie Melua Ringtones Born in Georgia (formerly part of the USSR) but brought up in Belfast in Northern Ireland Katie Melua is fast becoming one of the most famous singer/songwriters in her wishy-washy genre. The combination of an effortless singing style, excellent songwriting (by herself and composer Mike Batt) and a sensible and mature outlook on life has propelled her to the top of the charts in the Uk and Europe as well as limited success in the "difficult to crack these days" United States.
Batt, most famous for writing the theme tune to The Wombles, spotted Melau after she had completed her further education studies in Music and signed her on his Dramatico label. Her first album, Call Off The Search featuring songs written not only by herself but by Batt, Randy Newman and John Mayall reached the top spot in the UK Music charts in January 2004. The single Closest Thing To Crazy hit the top ten all around the world helping her debut album stay at Number #1 in the Uk for six weeks.
Notable appearances on TV included singing a duet with Jamie Cullum at the 2004 Brit Awards singing The Cure's Lovecats as well as appearing on the re-release of the Band Aid single -Do They Know It's Christmas?. In March 2005 she sang with one of her heroes - Queen - in a charity concert organised by Nelson Mandella.
Likened to Norah Jones, Nick Drake, Sinead O'Conner, Kate Bush and Bob Dylan her musical influences include Led Zepplin, Joni Mitchell, Irish folk music and music from Bollywood films though she was greatly inspired by the true tones of the late Eva Cassidy about whom she wrote the song Faraway Voice.
Late 2005 saw the release of her second album Piece By Piece which included the ringtone hits Nine Million Bicycles, Just Like Heaven, and Spider's Web.
Before Christmas 2005 she teamed up with The Pogues to sing Kirsty McColl's lines in the classic Chrimbo anthem Fairytale Of New York in a rare TV appearance.
In February 2006 she was nominated for a Brit award but lost out to KT Tunstall. Quotes about and from Katie MeluaI really like blues songs, jazz songs, and all stuff like that. Katie Melua
